400 district seats follow individual district medians. 400 nationwide PR seats use largest remainder (Hare quota), with no threshold. The two components are added, giving 800 seats. Seat share, representation bars and change from baseline use the selected view.

How the simulator works

Move the electorate

Economic and cultural shifts range from −1 to +1. Positive economic shifts move voters toward economic liberalism; positive cultural shifts move them toward traditionalism. Variance scales both axes around the national baseline median by its square root.

How district seats are decided

Each of 400 single-member districts elects the party closest to its median on the compass. As in the original model, this is a Condorcet/Ranked Pairs interpretation under Euclidean preferences and centrally symmetric district electorates. The app does not synthesize individual ranked ballots.

Nationwide PR and the combined parliament

A further 400 seats are allocated from national vote shares using largest remainder with the Hare quota. Every party is eligible; there is no threshold. PR seats are allocated independently and added to district seats. This parallel system has 800 total seats and a majority of 401. The Electoral Districts and PR List views each contain 400 seats. Majority indicators and coalition tools appear only in Combined. The three views show the Combined Assembly diagram, the electoral district cartogram, or the PR List vote-share chart. Party cards, history summaries and seat-share comparisons use the selected seat component.

The fixed left-to-right display order is SWP, UPL, SDP, Green, CA, LDP, Conservative, Libertarian, NF. Editing compass positions does not change this order.

Party compass and district medians

Compass shows party positions with a fixed minimum circle radius plus a contribution proportional to the square root of the party’s seat share in the selected component. Combined uses 800 total seats; Electoral Districts and PR List use 400. Hollow markers indicate zero seats. Clicking a bubble, a seat card or a sidebar party updates the same selection. The Districts Median Position tab after History retains voter density, district dots, party crosses, the national median and district hover details.

Party selection

Click a seat card or a party in the sidebar to select it. Selected cards and sidebar rows are highlighted; the other cards fade. The summary beside the diagram follows the selected party or coalition. Clear the selection to return to the largest party. In Combined, the summary includes majority information and up to four clickable coalition suggestions. Suggestions consider all eligible coalitions independently of the largest party and current selection. They exclude NF, UPL and SWP and follow the configured coalition priority tiers. Among combinations outside tiers 1–4, those without LDP–SDP, Libertarian–SDP, or CA–Libertarian pairs rank in tier 5; those containing any of these pairs rank in tier 6. Combinations involving cordoned parties are tier 7 and are excluded. Options within each tier are ordered by fewest parties first, then total coalition seats, largest first.

Assembly diagrams

Choose Hemicycle for a semicircle or Westminster for two facing benches. In Westminster, selecting party cards moves those parties to the lower government bench; the others sit opposite. Westminster always orders parties largest first within each bench. The Seat order control applies to the hemicycle. These layouts show the Combined Assembly. The PR List view instead shows vertical bars for national vote percentages in the fixed left-to-right party order, with a percentage-labelled y-axis. Each view has an SVG download for its chart or map.

Small local differences

The 50 district types retain their original centres and counts. Each district receives a fixed, paired offset of at most 0.20 compass units. Every type’s average stays at its original centre. Offsets are capped at 80% of the distance to the closest baseline party boundary, preserving the original baseline of 186–170. Offsets do not change when you run another election. Variation is fixed at 0.20; it is not an adjustable control.

District geography

The Electoral Districts view shows one equal tile per district, coloured by winner, type family or state. Select a state to zoom and a tile to inspect its population and original type. IDs use state prefixes. All 400 proposed geographic districts stay within one state and follow the modelled population density. State apportionment uses largest remainder. Political placement retains every original type and compass centre; it does not change national PR shares.

National votes

First-preference shares integrate the existing three-Gaussian national electorate over nearest-party regions across the full plane. The baseline economic marginal median remains 2.0. The national mixture and geographic district model are calibrated separately.

Random elections

Each draw starts from the same baseline. Economic shocks are normal with SD 0.35; cultural shocks have SD 0.25. Out-of-range draws are rejected and shifts rounded to two decimals. Log variance is normal with mean 0.04 and SD 0.20, truncated to [0.50, 2.00]. This retains the requested density equality f(V) = f(1/V). This condition is distinct from equal probability in reciprocal intervals.

Run saves the current preview. Random election draws one seeded shock. Draw N elections restarts the chosen seed, generates N fresh shocks, and adds them to history. Editing party positions is an exploratory scenario; the original calibration refers to the original party positions.
